You're Wasting my Time Sucka!

written by Allan on February 05, 2008

Jason Fried of 37signals says meetings are unproductive and I can't agree more. I would even go as far as saying most conference calls are a waste of time. Here my reasoning, it never fails someone will talk and talk and have no idea what they are talking about. You'll listen to their 10-minute ego speech using vague buzz words and then you'll disprove their "theory" in half a sentence. So please, if you don't know what you are talking about don't pretend to know. You don't see me with a blog about dieting do you? If someone asks a question and you don't know, don't pretend you know the answer. Save us all the agony of listening to you ramble around the wrong answer.

Learn how LessEverything built their consultancy to over $1,000,000 annual revenue at LessMoney Conference, June 7th in Tampa Florida. Each attendee will get early access to our upcoming ebook as well.

I’m reminded of that scene from the Simpsons where Chief Wiggum and one of his officers are deep at the bottom of a pit that they dug for themselves, and when they try to figure out what to do, the Chief orders the officer to keep digging. Confused, the officer starts to dig, and then the Chief yells, “No, no. Dig up, stupid! Dig up!”

It seems like that’s kinda what’s going on in a lot of meetings. Someone starts saying something, starts to get going the wrong direction, and then tries to “dig up” by continuing to rant.

Part of the reasons meetings suck so bad is because they encourage people to use words like “Action Items”, which gets people thinking about what to do next, not what how to solve the problem. And that leads you down the path of soft deliverables, business sign off, and other evils (see my Theory of Business rant).
