Different Candidates, Same Splash Page?

written by Allan on January 09, 2008

This isn't a post about politics, its about design. I found some major similarities between to the two splash pages. What do you think?

Why are the photos of the candidates and their families black and white? Is that to appear not tied to an ethnic group? I imagine there is probably some major market research behind that decision.

I do applaud John Edwards' design team for not being so stuck on red, white and blue.

I would say the photos are b/w so that they appear older than they really are and give a sense of timelessness, families that have been happy for a long time.

Or at least that’s my take on it.

Obama’s site looks to “cuddly.”

Looks like something I would give to a small child to keep busy for a while…

Admittedly, I like Obama’s site much better than John Edwards’ site. An earlier poster mentioned that the Edwards photo makes him seem timeless, but in my opinion, it is too much. I think too much about the past and do not have a feeling about progress, future, change…all the key words that a candidate would want to associate with themself.

Also, I really enjoy the type selection for Obama’s design much better than Edwards. I am not sure who thought that such a heavy type would be a good idea, but it doesn’t work.

I like Obama’s logo, also. If I had to knock Obama for one thing, it would be that once you enter your email address and zip code, what button are you supposed to click to submit that information. The “Learn More” button certainly seems inappropriate.
