SMS Notifications in Real Life
written by Allan on December 18, 2007
Today at 8:30am my wife dropped our 4-year-old golden retriever, "Murphy", off at the Vet to have him neutered. The vet’s plan was to keep him overnight to make sure there weren't any complications with the surgery. At 12:10 my wife received a text message "Murphy's procedure went very well, he should make a fine recovery. You can pick him up anytime tomorrow after 8am. Call us with any questions."
The sms message surprised me; normally I get a 5-minute phone call that stops my workflow. Or I missed the call and have to call them back, phone calls suck. Now I am all about customer service a personal touch. But this got me thinking how much more awesome a text message is in this situation. Note: if there was a complication in the surgery I would expect a phone call. It got me thinking, when are text message appropriate to notify a customer? SMS seems to be an under utilized tool for real-life situations.

Allan loves his family more than breathing. He lives in Panama City, Florida & grew up washing cars at his family's car washes. Oh and Allan hasn't worn underwear since 2004.

“SMS seems to be an under utilized tool for real-life situations.” Heh. Only in the U.S. But your post hits the nail on the head with why executives here in the Philippines find SMS indispensable.
